“I have lived in MA for 36 years and changed over to 100% renewable energy supply about 6 years ago.

As someone concerned with the environment and climate change, I opted to pay for 100% renewable energy. However, when my supplier rate doubled, I started searching for other suppliers.

With energy choice, I can choose and change my renewable energy supplier if rates increase. Sometimes choosing 100% renewable costs more, but this past winter and spring almost all of the plans were cheaper than the utility rate for fossil fuels. If I want to pay more to do my part to protect the environment, I should have the freedom to make that choice.

Before energy choice, the consumer was required to pay the six month rate offered by the utility, regardless of the price. The monopoly meant I had no opportunity to choose a supplier that met my needs or clean energy goals.

I think we all have the right to pick an energy plan that’s what we want. Choice gives me more control over my monthly energy bill and I can change plans if rates increase.

I wish our politicians would focus on common-sense reforms rather than closing the market and forcing customers to go back to the default utility. Solutions that make sense are things like requiring notices to be sent to customers for contract renewals, allowing people to quickly change suppliers instead of waiting for a bill cycle to end, and getting rid of early cancellation fees.

Instead of trying to take away energy choice, I think lawmakers should support an open energy market because it is better for the customer and start a program that educates the people of Massachusetts on how to shop for energy.”

“I’ve lived in MA for four years, and I’ve shopped for power here for three.

I think about my energy use and electric bill a lot. My goal is to get to 100% solar energy at my house by the end of this year. I’m in the process of getting solar installed, maybe batteries, and eventually heat pumps.

Climate change has been a major focus for me since the early 80s. Possibly, energy and climate conscious folks like me are more aware of their energy choices, but a lot of people have no idea they have options. I was able to tell someone I met in a parking lot the other day about their options – she had no idea, and was alarmed at the rate hikes.

Before I moved to Massachusetts, I owned a restaurant in New York City. I shopped and chose a supplier that powered my business with 100% wind energy, which felt great, and my customers appreciated. That’s how I first learned about energy choice and competitive suppliers.

The first time I shopped in Massachusetts, cost and how the energy was generated were my two primary concerns. I found a 100% renewable source that was only slightly higher than the rate I was getting from the utility. It also mattered to me how much of a headache it seemed like it was going to be to make the switch from the default utility. But honestly, it was pretty easy.

I have to wonder what motivation legislators have to close the market in Massachusetts, beyond just pressure from the utilities. I don’t understand how any constituents could be asking for this and can’t imagine why this would be good for anyone except the monopoly utility. I know there are some bad actors in these markets, and they should be stopped, and prosecuted. But that shouldn’t mean the end of all choice.”
